Catch-up

Woohoo!  I have finally updated my blog in, er...a month and a bit.  Things have been busy (which I like), what with my older half-sister's wedding, Christmas, Carey Park Kids Camp, the Scripture Union Ponui Island camp, and the Parachute Music Festival (not to mention various other social events in between all of the above).

Carey Park was good, but there were a few things about that particular camp that disappointed me.  One of them was the songs.  Now, I don't dislike the USA, but I have to say that you guys can come up with some of the cheesiest Christian camp songs.  Why am I griping about that in particular?  Well, one of the employees of Carey Park went to the States to do a whole summer's worth of leading/counselling at Christian children's camps; add that to the fact that nearly all of the Carey Park leaders had been complaining about how we never sing any new songs at camp, and you begin to see our problem.  She comes back to New Zealand all excited about the new friends she's made and whatnot, and when it came time to practice the camp worship songs at the leaders training weekend, she brings out a few of the songs she learned in California.  Bad, bad, bad idea!  Ugh, there was so much cheese from those songs we could have made enough pizza to feed everyone at the camp.

It wasn't all bad though - personally, I enjoyed meeting familiar faces and catching up with some people, as well as helping out by looking after the campers.  However, now that a new camp coordinator will be coming in (the one they had for this camp was a temp) I'm unsure as to whether I really want to go as frequently as I used to.  That, and it can kind of drag on you, doing every single camp in the same place.  So with that in mind, I'm probably going to volunteer for a few Scripture Union camps for a change of scene (and if the Ponui Senior camp was anything to go by, then they should be pretty good) and cut down my time at Carey Park to possibly once a year.

Oh, and Ponui Island was great!  The best camp I've ever been on, even if I wasn't a camper there.  Good fellowship, food, worship, talks, activities...the list is a bit long.  A link to some photos follow.

Sounds like you had an awesome summer!
Which scripture union camps would you lead on?

I know I don't know you, but I would have to agree with you about the songs...and I'm even from America.
Sorry about some of your experiences...don't think we're all like that! lol
